MS 87-135 consists of materials of or relating to Earl J. Hathaway. The collection is divided into two series, Series 1 consisting of personal correspondence and remembrances of Earl J. Hathaway (1932-46, ca. 1974) and Series 2, publications and near print material (1918-66). Topics of correspondence and remembrances includes growing up outside of Birmingham, Michigan; his service in the Mexican Border War and World War I; various jobs he had after World War I; and work as a state trooper. He also voices his opinions about the morals of the 1970's. Most of the publications and near print materials relate to work, hobbies or personal friends.

Captain Earl J. Hathaway was born May 14, 1894, in Birmingham, Michigan. He served in the Mexican Border War (1917) and in World War I (1918). These experiences gave him a love of horses and a love of military order. He joined the Michigan State Police on August 4, 1921. He moved quickly through the ranks and was promoted to captain on June 15, 1934.
